Arboviruses and Neuro-invasive Complications
90 minutes
Three new mosquito-borne viral infections have reached the U.S. since 1999. West Nile Virus (WNV) has recurred annually in the U.S. since then, appearing each year during late Summer and early Fall. Chikungunya (CHIKV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses have pandemics in South and Central America, with isolated cases appearing in the U.S. These three related viruses may cause no symptoms, flu-like febrile illness with characteristic symptoms, or may progress to Neuro-invasive disease – meningitis, encephalitis, flaccid paralysis, or to chronic joint pain. WNV affects between 1-5% of the U.S. population in any year. In this lecture I will describe the presenting symptoms of WNV, based on a review of more than thirty cases from Colorado between 2003-2012, and describe a general supportive protocol, as well as specific herbal therapeutics for WNV meningitis, encephalitis, or their aftermaths, with case studies. The protocols may be equally valuable in neurological or other sequelae of CHIKV or ZIKV.
