Insulin Resistance Syndrome
90 minutes
Metabolic Syndrome, a condition of insulin resistance with compensatory hyperinsulinemia, was defined in the later 20th century, and is now recognized as the underlying pathology to a cluster of diseases that now affect the majority of the population at some point in their lives. Here we define the syndrome, describe its causes, and describe methods of dietary change, supplementation, and exercise that can correct the condition. We describe the possible effects of twelve herbs on insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity. Panax ginseng, Gymnema sylvestre, Brickellia spp., Vaccinium spp., and Syzygium jambolana appear to lower blood glucose through undesirable mechanisms. Panax quinquefolius, Trigonella foenum-gracium, Grifola spp., Momordica charantia, Ocimum spp., and Cinnamomum cassia may act at least in part by increasing insulin sensitivity in the tissues.
